Travel 101 tips - Beach Holidays

Beach Holidays for Fun in the Sun  - By: Charles Petty, 2008-04-10

Everyone loves beach holidays! The little ones can dig in the sand and splash in the lapping waves. The older ones can swim, get a tan, or just relax. The inquisitive types can explore for sea life, tide pools, and drift wood. The warm breezes and natural beauty are invigorating and restorative. Any trip, however, can cause discomfort if you do not plan well. Here are things you can do to make your beach holidays easier, safer, and more meaningful.

In many parts of the world, people head for their beach holidays in the family car. When planning a trip, it’s always a good idea to give the car a good cleaning out first. This will give you more room for your luggage. Stock you glovebox, too, with a few first aid and comfort items, such as sunblock, acetominiphen for headaches, a roll of antacids, a few cough drops, and a few bandaids. Don’t forget a couple of scrunchies or pony-tailers for long hair. Get the tires checked and replace any that are likely to go flat. Get an oil change if it’s getting close. Road trips are not much fun when they include breakdowns. And whatever you do, make sure you have a map and a place to keep it handy.

Travelling with kids is always a challenge. They may be particularly excited and impatient when they know they are going on beach holidays. Make sure they have cool water bottles and healthy snacks to munch. Try a simple car game to make the time pass. Many kids like looking for letters of the alphabet on signs. If several people get involved it can be quite fun.

With beach holidays particularly, there is always a need to provide for skin safety. Be particularly careful about being in the sun for long stretches of time between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Use a sunblock with a high SPF rating and replace it after getting wet or drying off with your towel. The towel you choose can make a difference too. Thick towels get heavy and tend to trap a lot of sand. You may find you like thin towels at the beach. Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes and some sort of foot protection to keep your feet from being burned on the hot sand.

With a little preparation your beach holidays can be enjoyable and problem-free. When you arrive home you will be relaxed, refreshed, and ready for work. Take a minute to unpack and get your laundry going. It won’t belong until the kids will be shouting, “When can we go on beach holidays again?”

Travel 101 Tip: Planning your vacation at the beach

Monday 3 March 2008 @ 9:13 pm
Tips to planning your vacation at the beach

There are many items you should bring with you when traveling. Even if you are only traveling a few hours away from home, you should always make sure you have proper ID, first aid kit, water, and extra clothing. Because anything can happen while on vacation, you should also have an emergency contact list, cell phone, and any other items you think you may need in case there is an accident. Letting friends and family know where you are going is important as well. When you return, let them know you are back. This is important so people know where you are in case of an emergency at home.

Planning for your vacation is more than deciding which activities to participate in. You will need to book hotel, rental car, airfare, and other items ahead of time in order to get what you want. Depending on who you will be traveling with, you may need to make special accommodations such as booking an aisle seat or renting a large car to hold your luggage.

After arriving at your destination, you should look around to get a better idea of your surroundings. This will allow you to find your way back to the hotel after spending the day sightseeing or spending the day at the beach in Benidorm. If you are planning to take tours of monuments, ruins, museums, and other landmarks, you should bring binoculars, sight map, and other items you think will make your journey more exciting. When traveling with other people, make sure you have enough equipment for them as well. If you don’t want to travel with extra items, then you can buy them when you leave. This can make traveling a little easier.

Another item you should consider buying for your trip is travel insurance. This is additional insurance that will protect you once you leave the US. Because more health plans usually don’t cover medical emergencies that occur outside certain territories, you should buy travel insurance so you will be able to receive proper medical attention when traveling. This insurance can also help protect you if your luggage is lost or stolen, or you need to reschedule your trip do to a family emergency or bad weather conditions.

Your vacation should be a fun time where you are able to explore new places and meet new people. When traveling, try to remain safe and use good judgment. This will help prevent accidents, or emergency situations when travelling.

8 Tips For Budget Travel

By: Joseph Jordan

It can be tough to travel on a budget if you aren’t used to it. But there is no reason why you should stay home just because you don’t have scads of money! So, grab that battered, second hand Lonely Planet Guide and get going with these useful budget travel tips!

- Stay close to home. Instead of a family vacation to Disney World, why not scout out a fun location closer to where you live? There are plenty of other theme parks to consider that won’t require airfare and staying in some of the country’s more expensive hotels.

- Do your research. Start looking online for travel deals at least three months ahead of time if possible. That’s how you find special deals. Also, booking ahead saves you money since airlines and hotels charge premium rates for last minute travelers. You can often find deals for entrance tickets to places like Disney World and other popular attractions online.

- Be flexible and book extra time off are two very good travel tips. If you don’t necessarily have to go to Acapulco, why not check out airfare to other parts of Mexico? Also, being flexible with travel dates is ideal since certain days tend to be cheaper to fly on (like Tuesdays).

- Eat in travel tips: Find a hotel that includes breakfast and you save at least $6-15 per person on food a day! If you are traveling near home, try packing your own food. Or ask for a kitchenette and hit the local supermarket once you arrive. Preparing meals in your hotel room can drastically cut costs.

- To save money, follow these travel tips. If you are driving across the country, why not check out that free opal museum in Arizona or the World’s Largest Ball of String? These sights are free, but they are still interesting and can provide topics of conversation on the long drive to the real destination!

- Look online for coupons for anything. There are coupons for just about everything if you really look. Print some out for shows in Las Vegas or to get 2 for 1 entry to a museum. You can also find travel tips online.

- Don’t rent a car. If you are going somewhere like New York, just ask your hotel desk clerk about the subways or buses. And if you happen to be in California, check that the hotel you are thinking of booking offers a free shuttle to Disneyland or anywhere else. Most hotels offer free or cheap shuttle service to and from the airport as well.

- Some good food travel tips: when eating out, eat a big meal for lunch and go small for dinner. Lunch menus tend to be just as filling as dinner, but far cheaper in most restaurants. Look for a menu of the day, as well. These can be special offers that include an entire meal, soup, entree, drink and dessert for a set price. For supper, split an entree between two people or just order appetizers as your meal. Asking for just water is a good way to knock about $5-6 off each person’s tab!

You can travel on the cheap, and it is worth a try, even if you do have a bit of cash to spend. Just follow the travel tips above!

A-Packing-Checklist-Leave-Nothing-Behind

Tuesday 15 January 2008 @ 7:45 pm

by Grant Eckert

Packing for a trip, whether it’s a weekend getaway or a three week cruise can be a stressful undertaking. It is easy to forget an essential item; and it always seems like there is never enough room in your luggage for everything you want to take.

If you are traveling by air, you are generally allowed two checked pieces of luggage per person and one carry on bag. The carry on bag should be able to fit comfortably under the seat in front of you or in the overhead bin. The restriction on liquids is still in effect. All liquids, creams and lotions must be in containers of three ounces or less and contained in a quart size Ziploc bag.

Most experienced travelers understand the importance of carrying important items in their carry on bag, rather than their checked bag, especially if an airline has lost their luggage before. Your passport, tickets and any travel documents should be in your carry on bag, along with any vital medication, spare glasses or contact lens and prescriptions. A basic change of clothing is also a good idea.

Virtually all airline tickets today are electronic, although if you do have a paper ticket you should carry a copy of it in case you lose it. It is a good idea to make photocopies of your passport (the inside page with your information on) as well as any other travel documents. Keep these copies in a separate place. And you should also carry with you a list of important phone numbers to call in case your purse or wallet containing passport, tickets or credit cards are lost or stolen.

Many experienced travelers only take a carry on bag, regardless of the length of their trip. Traveling with just a carry on bag eliminates the often long wait at the baggage carousel, and, of course, the airline cannot lose your luggage.

One method of packing lightly is to put everything you intend to take out on the floor or bed in front of you, then consider each item individually and ask yourself “How often will I use it?” and “Do I really need it?” If you will only use the item rarely, you should consider leaving it at home. When packing your suitcase, place larger and heavier items on the bottom, and smaller items on the top.

Many items can be purchased inexpensively and easily, rather than having to take them with you. Simple toiletries, film for your camera and beach clothing can easily be found just about anywhere. Items that you feel you should take, but may not need, such as waterproof clothing and first aid items can be purchased when you arrive at your destination, if necessary. Most hotels now carry a selection of basic toiletries for guests who may have forgotten something.

Consider packing clothes that can easily be mixed and matched and will complement each other, rather than taking several different outfits. For example, a pair of neutral trousers will match several different sweaters or shirts. Most travelers can get by with just two pairs of shoes, a sturdy but comfortable pair for walking and sightseeing and a more stylish pair for wearing with dress clothes.

Shirts, suits and pants that do not crease easily or can be drip dried are also useful items to bring along. Most people find that a couple of changes of socks and underwear are usually adequate. Take along a plastic or mesh bag with you so that you can easily keep clean and dirty clothes separate. Many travelers have learned to wash small items of clothing in a hotel sink or bath.

Of course, the best way to ensure that you have everything is to make a checklist of what you are taking, and check the items off as you pack them. Some seasoned travelers start packing a few days beforehand to minimize the chance of forgetting anything important. If you are taking an item which can only be packed at the last minute, a note on your suitcase or on the front door can help you not to forget it.

In general, the most important items you will need to pack are going to be tickets and any travel documents, foreign currency and credit cards, camera and spare film, toiletries and medication. Some other things you may consider to be essential are spare batteries for various devices, an adaptor for plugging in appliances overseas, a book reading light, a wristwatch with an alarm and earplugs.

And if you have some spare room in your bag, don’t forget your address book and a traveler’s journal.
