It�s no secret that London prices are among the highest in the UK, whether you�re referring to property, hotel prices, or the cost of a pint of beer you can expect to pay that bit more in the capital.

For London�s inhabitants higher wages balance out the equally high cost of living, but for tourists the prices can seem a little too expensive. However there are some gems to be found that could make your next visit to London more affordable.

Hotels:

Even the basic Central London hotels charge up to �100 per night, so aim for hotels on the outskirts. Bed and breakfast guesthouses within a 20-minute tube ride the centre start from �25 per night and offer a more relaxed atmosphere to the hectic city life. If you are keen to stay within the centre try popular hotel chains such as Ibis or Travel Lodge which offer savings for advanced bookings. For something a bit different some of the London universities will rent out empty student dormitories from �25 per night.

Transport:

The most efficient way to travel around London is on the tube an underground train network. If you are travelling to London by train from elsewhere in England enquire at your departing station about purchasing a London travelcard with your regular train ticket, this usually works out cheaper than buying in London.

If you are already in London try to establish the cheapest option for your journey, if you are travelling a short distance on a single trip buy a standard journey ticket. Otherwise opt for a daily travelcard which could save you a fair amount if you are making several different journeys.

For some journeys a bus may be more appropriate in which case fairs start at �1.20 for a single journey.

Attractions:

London offers some fantastic museums, many of which are free to visit. The natural history museum is great for all ages offering a huge range of exhibits including a gigantic T-Rex dinosaur.
There are also some fantastic attractions that charge a reasonable admission fee including London Zoo with family tickets priced at �47 and a single adult ticket �14.50.

Food and Drink:

London offers a fine array of restaurants and bars that will suit all tastes, for something a little different try Fire and Stone in Convent Garden which offers unique pizzas from �6.95. Bodeans BBQ restaurant in Soho which serves a variety of succulent barbecued meat with main courses starting at �7.50.
